Finnish Memes

Artist talk at the Finnish Museum of Photography, 8 December 2010, 5 - 6 pm

Join us for a discussion and lecture with video artist Derek Larson!

Derek Larson (b. 1978) is an American new media artist, currently gathering information on Finnish internet culture for a project while a resident artist at Arteles in Pirkanmaa. His project titled "Finnish Memes" will include scenes of the
landscape surrounding Helsinki and Tampere combined with online imagery and
videos collected from lists provided by local residents.

Join us for a discussion on current video making practices and bring
suggestions of landscape locations and online media that you would like to
see captured in Larson's work.

Derek Larson is a new media artist exhibiting works in the US and abroad. He
was recently commissioned by the Tethervision Video Collective in Nottingham
UK. In 2009 he received the Premio Terna Prize in Connectivity from the Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale in Italy and was nominated for the Joan Mitchell
Fellowship in New York City. He continues to show his work in the US and

The series "Closed System Media" addresses sculptural space in online media
with the intention of closing each video in a culturally specific
feedback-loop. Larson is interested in the space where narrative video meets
glitch and considering online media physically, or with aura, in the
infinitely reproducible media of video. The case for digital aura is best
supported by the following question: "Is it as hard to delete files from
your hard drive as it once was to let go of nostalgic objects?" His videos
are a result of aftermarket practices; or the rummaging through a seemingly
endless and virtual landfill of digital trash.
