The Finnish Museum of Photography’s project Vuosaari - In Other Words starts in the spring of 2016 in Vuosaari, Helsinki. The three year project will bring with it a multitude of events and exhibitions, including photography, audio and video workshops for the youth in Vuosaari. The needs and wishes of local youths will determine the final shape and form of the events.

Through the Vuosaari - In Other Words project, The Finnish Museum of Photography will engage the population of Vuosaari with activities and events that enable participation. The project is carried out with the support of the City of Helsinki Cultural Office, and is a part of the Helsinki Model.

The aim of The Helsinki Model is to diversify and create a balance between the arts and cultural activities offered in various parts of the city. Arts organisations and groups of professional artists are urged to step outside and work together with local residents and communities in various districts.

This year the project will include, among other things:

Restaurant Day 21.5. Vuosaari - In Other Words Photowalk

The Photowalk will embark from the main doors of Vuosaari House at 12 p.m. During the Photowalk, participants will focus on spotting and photographing signs of nature and springtime in an urban environment. The walk will last approximately an hour, it is free of charge and open for all. You will need a camera, a simple camera phone will do, or alternatively you can just walk with the group. The directors of the project will also be taking part in the walk.

We hope, that you will share your pictures in Instagram with the hashtag #vuosaaritoisinsanoen, so that everyone will be able to enjoy your photos!

Pathways – a photography course exploring self-portraiture and the sense of space:

Pathways is an art project born out of the Debora initiative by the YWCA. Photographic artist and art educator Noora Sandgren worked with young girls, and together they aspire to reinforce participants’ feeling of inclusivity in decision-making and their surrounding environment.

SoundGraffiti – a course in sound art and photography

SoundGraffiti will explore the question of who controls the soundscapes of public spaces, and whether it is possible to influence them or not. Graffiti is a visual means of challenging commercial ownership of public spaces – SoundGraffiti will do the same with sounds.

The workshop sets out to contemplate the soundscape of various urban environments. What is the spirit or essence of a certain space? Participants will work with photography and experimental sound design. The director of the course is art educator Tuukka Kangas.

The finished works will be exhibited in various public spaces around Vuosaari in the early fall of 2016.

The course will take place in June, during weeks 23-25, from Wednesday to Friday in the Kallahti Youth Centre in Vuosaari. A more specific timetable will be announced later.
