PARALLEL – European Photo Based Platform

PARALLEL is a platform that brings together creative European organisations committed to promoting cross-cultural exchanges and mentorships in order to set new standards in contemporary photography.

Parallel Open Call 2018

Parallel has now opened the call for its 2nd cycle, starting in June 2018 and ending in September 2019. This call aims to select 30 new artists and 8 new curators working with photography, new media and visual arts that will be participating in the PARALLEL Platform 2nd Cycle.

The artists and curators selected will be taking part in one of the most innovative creative processes of the actual scenario of contemporary photography, going from scratch to the exhibition, alongside with 37 other artists and curators from all over the world, as well as with the most prestigious professionals of the area.  For artists this cycle of PARALLEL involves the participation in the PARALLEL artistic guidance to develop a new project and travelling and presentation of their work in several festivals and exhibitions in a wide range of European sites. Capa Center, QUAD/FORMAT, Photo London or Arles are among them. For curators the participation in this platform includes PARALLEL artistic guidance to develop a new curatorial project with the new work produced by the 2nd cycle artists, exhibitions’ organization at one of the PARALLEL Members locations and travelling and presentation of their curatorial work in several places, being the most important held in Lisbon at PARALLEL Review Lisboa. This will be the first moment the new curators’ exhibitions are presented altogether and where the PARALLEL Award will be given to the most compelling exhibition.

For all candidates this an opportunity to enlarge their network all over the world - Zagreb (HR), Derby (UK) or Lisbon (PT) are just a few places where everyone will have opportunity to work. Selected artists will also gain widespread exposure, seeing their project promoted internationally through several PARALLEL activities and published in the yearly Catalogue PARALLEL Atlas. Getting known by the most prestigious professionals of the area is, likewise, one of the most important achievements of the participation in this project. The works submitted will be evaluated by Esther Teichmann, a London based artist, PhD in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art; Jörg Colberg, writer, photographer and educator based in Northampton (MA, USA), founder and editor of CPhMag.com; Louise Clements, Artistic Director of QUAD (Derby UK), since 2001, Founder and Director of FORMAT International Photography Festival; Simona Vidmar, Maribor Art Gallery Head Curator (SI), MA in Art History (Graz, AT) and MA in Arts Management (London, UK); Nuno Ricou Salgado, Artistic Director of PARALLEL European Photo Based Platform, Creative Director of Flâneur New Urban Narratives (2015-17), co-funded by the European Commission and UNESCO. Nuno was also awarded with the prize Portuguese Producer of the Year 2014.

About Parallel Platform

PARALLEL is a platform that brings together 18 creative European organizations committed to promoting cross-cultural exchanges and mentorships, in order to set new standards in contemporary photography. Members include museums, galleries, festivals, art schools and publishers – 18 of the most vibrant European cultural hubs, from 16 countries, that will participate in selecting and hosting new artists and curators, organizing exhibitions and promoting artistic networking. The large and diverse nature of the network ensures a wide geographical spread and a fertile ground for fostering new dialogues, sparking ideas and helping to boost creativity.

PARALLEL intends to remove artificial boundaries between artists and curators to create grounds for promoting a horizontal way of working and new forms of artistic cooperation through a process that instigates encounters to promote synergies and cross-fertilisation.

The Platform work process is implemented in two-phases: Creative Guidance - selection, tutoring, peer learning and curatorship. Exhibition Platform - a diverse exhibition network engaging exhibitors, universities and art schools. The first PARALLEL Platform cycle had its first moment in November 2017 and ends in September 2018 at the Intersection Zagreb.

PARALLEL is designed and led by Procur.arte and is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme (2017 - 2021).
