Street photography - what is it? And what makes a good street photograph?

Street photography is an integral part of the history of photography and is still eagerly practiced today by both professionals and hobbyists alike. Street Photo Walks are series of events devoted to revealing the secrets of street photography, training one’s eye to spot what tends to go unnoticed and capturing the candid life on street. Organized by the Finnish Museum of Photography, these walks are led by street photographers and enthusiasts of urban landscape that share their gaze, tips and tricks – Kasperi Kropsu, Negin Hosseini, Rahul Thakuri, Taru Latva-Pukkila.

During the Street Photo Walk on the 24th of August, participants will be guided through the Helsinki city centre by street photographer Negin Hosseini, revealing secrets, tips and tricks of street photography. Negin Hosseini will discuss her photographic process, favourite places and routes and give advice on subjects, angles and juxtapositions. The walk will also include background information on street photography given by a museum guide. Participants will use their own devices (camera or phone) to take photographs, learn new ways of looking at familiar scenes and get inspired by their surroundings.

"My photography journey began in Ahvaz, Iran in 2008 with street photography - although I didn’t know there was a name for it then. I just loved capturing candid moments of life with real people. I moved to Finland in 2011, and after a long time of finding the Finnish temperament aloof and reserved, I found that capturing moments of people in everyday life started showing them to me in a different light; every photo I took gave me a glimpse into the vast pool of stories walking the streets of Helsinki, deepening my connection to the understated authenticity of the city and its people.

We walk among entire universes every day. Capturing someone in a moment, existing in their universe and mine at the same time, is like making and documenting a connection that reminds us we’re not alone. When I take photos of people, I try to peek into their world - who are they, what are they feeling, what hopes and dreams do they have, what drives them?Of course, I can only guess. But I feel the true beauty of street photography is acknowledging that everyone has a story as rich and unique as our own."
